We welcome you to the official website of Ghoramara Gram Panchayat which is recorded as the smallest Gram Panchayat of West Bengal. A visit through this site will provide you a complete outlook about the beautiful Gram Panchayat.
Ghoramara, a single use plastic carry bag prohibited Gram Panchayat, is a part of Sundarban Delta and is a desolate and sparsely occupied islet under Sagar Block of South 24 Parganas. River Ganges and her tributaries enclose the Gram Panchayat by all the sides. It is said that Lord Hamilton once named this island after the death of his dead horse. Till 1970’s this Gram Panchayat comprised with three census villages (Mouzas) namely Lohachura, Khasimara & Ghoramara and stretch was about 30 sq.km but massive erosion driven by rising sea levels has caused the land to shrink by almost eighty percent of its original size since last 50 years. Erosion has already engulfed Lohachura & three fourth portion of Khasimara. Presently the Gram Panchayat covers only 5.5 sq km area, comprising with 4 villages (Gram Sansads) and 7 hamlets only. This is one of the rarest places because this is absolutely ZERO POLLUTION place; there is neither any motorized vehicle or industry/ factory nor any provision of conventional electricity. Solar lights are the only provision to enlighten. Recently IIT-Kharagpur has set up an off-grid Solar power plant & wind mill to facilitate the islanders.
Every year Ghoramara has to face one or two natural calamities and somehow manages to survive till now. But in spite of having so many difficulties, a visit to Ghoramara must be a lifetime experience as one can breathe absolutely pollution free fresh air; can enjoy lush green vegetation all around the island along with vast seashore, chirpings of varieties of known-unknown birds and alluring calmness of nature.
